LSRP

/surp/ · one syllable, Spelled out, L-S-R-P.

noun. Light Sonics Research Production.

1.A research laboratory and production studio that treats light, sound and frequency as one subject.

2.The practice of reading the world within and the world without as a single system.

Origin

Light — Old English lēoht, from the Proto-Indo-European root *leuk-, "to shine". The same root gives lucid, luminous and lunar.

Sonics — from Latin sonus, "sound", from the root *swen-, "to make a sound". The same root gives resonance and sonata. As a science, sonics is the study and use of sound waves.

Research — from Old French recercher, "to seek out closely", built on Late Latin circare, "to go around", from circus, "circle". To research is, literally, to circle a thing again.

Production — from Latin producere, "to bring forth", from pro-, "forward", and ducere, "to lead".

Read together: to shine and to sound, circled again and brought forward.

Mission

LSRP is a research laboratory and production studio that treats light, sound and frequency as one subject. We study how they move through the systems we live in, from the cell to the biosphere to the wider cosmos, and we make work from what we learn. Research and production share one roof because each corrects the other: the lab keeps the art honest, and the art reaches what the lab cannot yet name.

Thesis

Every living system runs on energy arriving as waves. Sunlight sets the chemistry of the biosphere and the daily rhythm of nearly every organism in it. Sound carries information through air, water and tissue. Electromagnetic fields, natural and manufactured, now fill every inhabited environment. These are not separate topics; they are one continuous spectrum acting across scales, and most of it passes through the places we live unexamined.

We read that spectrum in both directions. Bottom up: how photons, vibration and field act on cells, organisms and ecosystems, and how those effects compound into the behaviour of a whole biosphere. Top down: how the physics of stars, orbits and atmospheres sets the conditions life on this planet adapted to, and what changes when we alter them. Where the two directions meet is the human being: an organism with its own rhythms, thresholds and electrical activity, embedded in an environment that is increasingly engineered, and equipped with a nervous system that registers that environment long before any instrument is pointed at it.

That is why LSRP works with two kinds of knowing. Instruments tell us what is there. Perception, attention and intuition tell us what it does to a living system from the inside, and they often notice first. A room that feels wrong, a frequency that settles a crowd, a quality of light that changes how people speak to each other: these are observations, and they are where our questions start. The world within and the world without are one system seen from two sides. Our work is to hold both views at once, stating clearly which is which, and to let each test the other.

Scope

Four scales, one practice. Cellular and physiological: light, sound and field, and what they do to the organism. Environmental: the acoustic and electromagnetic character of real rooms, buildings and landscapes. Planetary: the biosphere as a single energy system, from solar input to climate to the night sky we have altered. Cosmic: the constants, cycles and signals that frame all of the above. We work at the scale the question demands and say plainly which one we are at.

How we work

Three lines run side by side. Research: structured programs with stated methods, partners and published notes, including the results that disappoint. Production: films, music, installations and audio-visual systems, made as a way of thinking rather than only as an output. Release: an independent label for the music and films that come out of the lab. Scientists, artists and people who simply notice things are welcome at every stage.
