RESEARCH
Programs, methods, partners, notes.
The lab works at four scales, cellular, environmental, planetary and cosmic, and with two kinds of knowing: instruments, and the perception of the people in the room. Every program states its method before it reports a result, and we publish what we find, including when the answer is nothing.
Programs
Sound-to-light synchronisation
A system that turns music into light in real time, for installations and live shows. First prototype in the lab.
Everyday exposure survey
Documenting the electromagnetic and acoustic environments people live in, starting with homes, studios and venues, with instruments and with the people who live there.
Controlled listening studies
Structured listening sessions with a university partner, to test whether specific sound and light conditions change what people report and what can be observed. Partner search open.
Planetary and cosmic context
A reading program on solar input, atmosphere and the constants and cycles that frame the other three.
Methods
We state the method before the result.
We record both instrument readings and first-person reports, and keep them separate.
We publish null results.
Notes and papers
On the acoustic character of domestic spaces
Preliminary notes from the everyday exposure survey, first twelve sites.
Sound-to-light: first prototype log
Build notes and early observations from the first lab prototype.
Reading list: planetary and cosmic context
An annotated bibliography for the fourth program, in progress.
Partners
Partner details to follow. We are currently seeking a university partner for the controlled listening studies program.
